After we discuss the design proposal with Mr and Mrs Smith, and incorporate suggested modifications, they are happy to proceed. We receive their confirmed order, with a deposit of 50%.
Sourcing materials for the project requires visits to specialist suppliers, at home or abroad. Michael hand selects the boards, looking at grain, colour and character. For Mr and Mrs Smith's project, he chooses quarter sawn wenge boards for the faceted headboard and drawer fronts; we want the quilted pattern to enthrall, and strong figure would disturb the eye. For the sides of the bed and carcases, rift wenge is chosen. Here, we prefer a lively palette. The hardwax oil finish the Smith's chose (six coats, hand rubbed and buffed) will develop a lustrous patina over time.
