Get lost in the desert. The place to stay in 29 Palms; adobe bungalows and historic wood frame cabins, amidst fan palms, palo verde, mesquite, and an oasis lagoon. Some of us used to stay there, and then bought a house around the corner. Now we just have dinner by the pool, listen to the Hafler Brothers while we watch for the owl to return to its home in the huge fan palm.

Desert wildlife and landscapes come to vivid life in Chuck Caplinger's masterful paintings and murals of the Southwest. You can't miss Caplinger's giant roadrunner on the East wall of the Smoketree building as you enter the city of 29 Palms; the West wall features a ginormous lizard lolling on boulders. Make an appointment to visit his gallery in his home, a Dome building on the edge of the 29 Palms entrance to the Joshua Tree National Park. If you really have to leave 29, make sure to bring home a coyote framed with desert-weathered timber and found objects.
