2024
Unique piece
Fourth in Zelouf & Bell's Kimono series, Kimono with Peonies captures the soul of a c 1930s "extravagant, richly decorated kimono (hõmongi) depicting a garden with flowering peonies of all colors, influenced by Western oil paintings, painted and embroidered with silk and metallic threads, with applied gold paste", as described in a catalogue excerpt from the Metropolitan Museum of Art 2014 exhibition Kimono: A Modern History. Using a combination of traditional joinery techniques and contemporary technology, the cabinet is designed to be viewed both from the front and back. Fully opened and viewed from the back, it becomes a vivid, book matched screen. Offering ample storage for jewellery via eight lockable leather-lined soft close drawers with removable leather-lined inserts and six removable deposit-box style leather-lined drawers, with adjustable height chamfered shelves and optional safe. Figured mahogany, mahogany, bronze, gold leaf, celadon leather, brass, tiger's eye and lacquers.

A spectral stand of silver birch at twilight. Low contrast, tone-on-tone hand-cut marquetry in quarter sawn brown oak wraps around the ‘horizon’ of 5000 year old bog oak panels, grounded by a wenge plinth. The eye fills in details intentionally left out of the pattern. Hand rubbed oil finish.

BLUE SERPENT COCKTAIL CABINET
2021
Zelouf & Bell’s Blue Serpent Cocktail Cabinet, second in a series of Fabergé-inspired cabinets, features a marquetry serpent in brass and mother of pearl, inlaid in cobalt blue figured eucalyptus, with a hand rubbed, high gloss lacquer finish. The cocktail cabinet, a dialogue between past and present, takes its cue from a vivid blue enamelled Faberge cigarette case, itself inlaid with gold and diamonds, a love token given to King Edward VII by his favourite mistress, Mrs. George Keppel, in 1908. The sinuous diamond-set snake biting its tail is a symbol of unbroken and everlasting love.
Lockable doors (with concealed handles) open to reveal traditionally made, curved chamfered adjustable height shelving, charcoal shagreen bar top, and a drawer featuring a section of marquetry serpent; the drawer, lined with shagreen, houses a tray inlaid with a golden baby serpent section and patinated brass handles. The interior cabinet back has a gold and ivory crackled finish; interior doors are fitted with shelves and retaining brass rails to store and display bottles. Photos by Roland Paschhoff

JAGUAR AND THE CROW COCKTAIL CABINET
2018
Unique piece
Zelouf & Bell’s Jaguar and the Crow Cocktail Cabinet seems to spring from the mythical past, part jungle, part Gatsby-era party. The Makassar ebony cabinet is inlaid with a wrap-around burr walnut branch upon which a marquetry crow is perched, keeping watch over the figured mahogany and bolivar jaguar, a stylised Jouve beast, baring its mother of pearl teeth, flashing a mother of pearl eye. The Makassar ebony interior features a charcoal shagreen bar-top above a drawer which opens by touch, concealing a shagreen tray. A dreamy stainless steel panel mirrors the /barware; vivid graphic absinthe bottles tattoo the interior doors, as if emerging from some Art Deco-era wild soiree. The cabinet’s handles are concealed in the burr branch; a chrome-plated solid brass plinth elevates it. Hand rubbed high gloss lacquer finish. Photos by Roland Paschhoff

HEN PHEASANT COCKTAIL CABINET
2016
Limited edition of 3 pieces + AP
A poetic cocktail cabinet in figured mahogany, riffing on rich reflective surfaces inspired by Ireland’s coast; the wing of a bird, a glint of sun off rain-slicked rock, the mutable tide, stone, with a reflective hand rubbed high gloss lacquer finish. A textured, patinated bronze hen pheasant, a small wild thing by Irish sculptor Cheryl Brown is mounted on one of the asymmetrical doors, pausing at the long channel handle, as if it wandered from its world into ours. The bronze hen seems almost unfinished; our eyes fill in the detail the sculptor leaves out. In contrast, the cabinet's ripple sycamore interior is articulate, refined, formal; fragments of exquisitely detailed marquetry feathers are inlaid in a graphic pattern feature on the left and right drawer fronts, and, more expansively, on the tray inside the middle drawer. Dimmable LED lighting is fitted in the upper interior section, illuminating the inside of the cabinet upon opening. Ivory shagreen work top, leather-lined drawers, aged brass rails. Hand rubbed gloss lacquer finish exterior, with a satin lacquer interior finish. Available in a selection of materials/finishes/dimensions.

SCULLIED WALL-MOUNTED DRINKS CABINET
2012
Unique piece
Inspired by Irish artist Sean Scully’s Wall of Light series, this wall-mounted drinks cabinet uses a palette of pressure-dyed woods in varying thicknesses, referring to Scully’s application of paint and to the Irish landscape, an abutment of walls and fields. The piece’s title ‘Scullied’ is applied here as a verb, a term of our own invention, meaning the act of getting drunk, fluttered/langered/scuttered. Scully discusses the relationship between alcohol, art and the artist in “A Mudpit of His Own Making”. Selected pressure-dyed veneer including iced koto, blue bolivar, grey oak, Makassar ebony, grey tay, black birch, wenge, smoked oak. A lower flap opens to form a surface upon which to make a drink; the cabinet doors open to reveal an iced koto interior and a striped drawer. Hand rubbed satin lacquer finish.

KIMONO CABINET
2013
Unique piece
Commissioned by a collector client to house her bakeware: bundt pans, cake tins, cookie trays. Inspired by our client's love of Rothko paintings and Japanese armaments (Samurai used fans to signal to their fighters), the cabinet serves as a sculptural splash of colour in a neutral, contemporary kitchen. The cabinet's orange birch interior, plinth and drawer bottoms feature marquetry in a David Hicks fabric pattern called 'Kyoto Shrine', a reference to the wonderfully detailed patterns in the silk lining of traditional Japanese kimonos and a nod to our association with Galerie David Hicks in Paris. The fan is dimensional; carved, lacquered drawer fronts allude to folds of kimono fabric. In pressure-dyed timbers including orange bolivar, red birch, carved and lacquered solid walnut, palladium leaf.

DANU FLATSCREEN CABINET
2017
Limited edition of 6 pieces + AP
Zelouf & Bell’s Danu Flatscreen Cabinet features elements of our lattice series, with solid wenge lattice panels seen in traditional timber houses in Kyoto and used as a detail in Arts + Crafts architecture in the USA, i.e. Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes. The bold wenge lattice work is softened by a background of pale pink ripple sycamore.
How it works: the door concealing the flatscreen, when pushed in, smoothly runs in and down, allowing the user to then guide it all the way down from the top of the cabinet door, ending up behind the lower hinged doors, a low-tech solution we’ve engineered, designed and developed. The cabinet’s carcase and solid frame are fumed figured eucalyptus, with solid wedge lattice, set on a solid wenge base. Blush pink ripple sycamore ‘lines’ the cabinet doors; the interior of the cabinet is pink ripple sycamore. The lower cabinet opens with a recessed channel handle at the top; two adjustable height shelves offer storage.

CAIRN TABLES
2020
Writer Robert MacFarlane chose cairn as a Word of the Day during the pandemic, (from the Gaelic càrn), a stone-stack that acts as path marker, a guide indicating the way forward during bad weather, when the route is uncertain and the going tough. More than just an encroachment of boulders, it means there are those who’ve preceded us, once lost themselves, and, having managed to find their way, made a conscious decision to leave something meaningful behind. Zelouf & Bell’s Cairn tables act as anchor pieces, at either end of a sofa or next to a club chair, in classic or contemporary interiors. Available to order, in a selection of timbers, including figured mahogany, fumed figured eucalyptus, walnut, cherry, oak, ripple sycamore and bird’s eye maple.
